We are a Registered "Raw Milk Farm Dairy Operator" with the Ministry of Primary Industries.
A brief history - It was just MILK. No raw, blue top, green top, silver top etc. but in the late 1800 people starting getting sick from consuming milk. The problem wasn't that it was raw, it was the condition of the animals and the feed they were given. The animals were sick and malnourished, so the milk they produced was also sick. Scientists stepped in and discovered by heating the milk, it "killed" the sickness within the milk, making it "safe" to drink. This option was cheaper than to make the animals healthy again and so pasteurisation was born. Move forward a few 100 years and pasteurisation is the normal and "raw" milk is taboo.
What is pasteurisation? - It is a treatment or process where the milk is heated to a specific temperature for a set amount of time to kill harmful bacteria. But it also kills the GOOD, beneficial bacteria. The heating of the milk also destroys the enzymes within the milk which our bodies need to digest dairy products. Raw milk is an untreated, unprocessed, wholefood. It is a natural source of calcium, magnesium and potassium and the butterfat within raw milk, contains both vitamins A and D.
Is it safe? - Absolutely! Through MPI we have a rigorous cleaning scheme that we adhere to, plus regular milk testing to ensure we produce a healthy, safe milk product. Our cows are healthy & well loved animals, part of the farm family.
